Kitao Sakurai directs Bad Trip, a 2021 American hidden camera comedy film. The film follows two best friends (Eric Andre and Lil Rel Howery) on a road trip from Florida to New York City in order for one of them to declare his love for his high school crush (Michaela Conlin), all while being pursued by the other’s criminal sister (Tiffany Haddish), whose car they have stolen for the journey.
Bad Trip is actually two films fused into one, but the whole is evidently less than the sum of its parts. The first is a raunchy buddy comedy about Chris (Andre) and his best friend Bud (Lil Rel Howery) attempting to travel across the country so the former can see his high school crush Maria (Michaela Conlin). The second is a series of hidden camera pranks on unsuspecting people, who, as the end credits show, often respond with a sense of humour when the ruse is finally exposed. They could afford to be forgiving because they didn’t have to sit through the resulting painfully unfunny video.
