Mumbai Saga Story in Short & Trailer
In Mumbai Saga, a crime drama set during a pivotal time in the evolution of the megacity’s violent underbelly, the cops-and-gangsters formula of Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout films returns in a markedly tempered form. The blood-splattered tale, which stars John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi, is only mildly entertaining.
In addition to John and Emraan, the film featured Gulshan Grover, Suniel Shetty, Mahesh Manjrekar, Rohit Roy, and others.
Mumbai Saga takes place in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the city of dreams was undergoing a significant transformation.
The film swaggers around to the tune of Amar Mohile’s operatic background score, loosely based on the real-life siblings Amar and Ashwin Naik but mostly operating in the realm of fiction. John Abraham is the swaggerer-in-chief, trying to appear menacing and purposeful at all times but often coming off as haggard and overwhelmed at playing a young man on the rise. Second on the list is Emraan Hashmi, a not-so-smart cop who is merely a pawn in a larger game.

John Abraham is at his best. He has the appearance of a feared gangster and is excellent in action scenes. He flashes his dimpled smile a few times in the film, which adds to his character’s charm. Emraan Hashmi is a late entry, which will irritate his fans. But he starts rocking as soon as he enters the storey. He not only steals the stage with his action, but also with his one-liners. In theatres, his dialogue about the police uniform would trigger a frenzy.
Mahesh Manjrekar is brilliant in the role of the astute politician. Amole Gupte is a great performer. Prateik Babbar has an unusual appearance but manages to make an impact. Anjana Sukhani and Kajal Aggarwal have small roles. Tithi Raaj (Neelam, Arjun’s wife) is in the same boat. Gulshan Grover (Nari Khan) has a stylish and respectable appearance. As Amartya’s right hand man, Rohit Bose Roy (Baba) is excellent. However, his motivation in the second half seems to be a little flimsy. Harsh Sharma, Samir Soni, Shaad Randhawa (Jagannath), Vivaan Parashar (Sadashiv), and Shaad Randhawa (Jagannath) are all fine. Suniel Shetty (Sada Anna) looks amazing in a special look. He tends to be quite trendy.
Some of the plot twists, conflicts, and layered complexities become too much to handle at this stage. We are, however, pleased to see some action on the big screen this year, especially when it comes from Sanjay Gupta himself.
