Amole Gupta directs Saina, a Bollywood biopic-drama. The film is based on the life of badminton player Saina Nehwal, with Parineeti Chopra in the lead role. Shraddha Kapoor was expected to star in the biopic. However, due to scheduling conflicts, the actress dropped out of the film, and Parineeti Chopra took her place.
The film opens with Saina (Chopra) speaking to a group of journalists who have gathered to congratulate her on her win at the Commonwealth Games — a scene in a media room that is exaggerated. They enquire about the usual things – “How does it make you feel? How do you deal with setbacks?” Saina narrates her journey from giving up on “dolls and birthday parties” as a child to picking up a badminton racquet and fighting to become the best player in the world in a flashback that lasts until the very end of the film.
